2021 music education event session 1
Sunday, February 28, 2021

Our popular Music education event returns in 2021, by Zoom.

Deadline to APPLY to participate, was February 21, 2021.

We are excited to announce Julie Smith Phillips, Principal Harpist of San Diego Symphony, as this year’s Music Ed adjudicator!

Read more about the Music Ed (A.k.a. auditions & evaluations) on the national AHS site.

The sessions will be held on the last Sunday in February (the 28th) and the last Sunday in March (the 28th).  Harp students of all ages and all levels are encouraged to participate (especially beginners and intermediates).  Students play for an Advisor (guest harp teacher) and get his or her suggestions at the first session, and return at the second session to show the progress they’ve made. This is a master-class type setting (all the participants get to see each others’ performances and interactions with the teacher).  It often gives students a fresh perspective and new inspiration to get suggestions from someone other than their regular teacher, as well as to see and hear other students’ performances and suggestions from the Advisor.

$25 fee covers both sessions (February and March).  The advisor will provide written comments at both sessions.

• Participants and their teachers must be current members of AHS-LA. Click here for membership information.

• Participants must use original sheet music. Participants may be asked to provide adjudicator with a pdf scan of their music.

 • At the first session, participants should play two selections of their own choosing, representing contrasting styles and not exceeding 7 minutes.

• At the second session, participants will perform their selections again, incorporating the advisor's advice.

• An additional selection may also be performed at the second session as long as total playing time does not exceed 7 minutes.

• Participants must have access to a harp, stable internet connection, an internet connected device, and audio/video capability. It is preferred for participants to have a hardwired internet connection and high quality external mic and speakers if possible.

We want to make sure this program is accessible to as many people as possible.

If you need help with your technical set-up please contact Allison Allport at least one day prior to the session.

Application (below) and $25 application fee (further below) must be submitted online by February 21.

Participants will be assigned a session from 1-2:30 pm or 2:30-4 pm and are encouraged to stay for the entire session to maximize learning and support fellow harpists.
